The/saviour of the state from secession;/the patriotic citizen - soldier, who/fought from the beginning to the/end of the war; the magnanimous/statesman, who, as soon as the/war was over, breasted the/torrent of prescription, to restore/to citizenship the disfranchised/southern people, and finally, the incorruptible public servant. signed Founder's mark appears.
    Description: 
    Standing male figure wearing 19th century civilian clothing, including long coat. Figure's proper left leg is slightly forward, and his proper right arm is bent with raised fist. His proper left hand is at his side, holding a scroll. This bronze figure is mounted on an elaborate granite base.

    Remarks: 
    Figure donated by Blair Monument Association; base funded by the City of St. Louis. Cost approximately $10,000. IAS files contain copies of articles from St. Louis Globe-Democrat, May 13, 1885, which discusses plans for the dedication ceremony; St. Louis Globe Democrat, May 17, 1885, which details the commissioning and creation of the sculpture and its base; and Missouri Historical Society Bulletin (July 1960), which discusses the dedication ceremony, at which General William Tecumseh Sherman spoke.
    IAS files contain copy from unpublished 1969 Mayor's Report, "Pubic Art - St. Louis," which explains that the monument was located originally in the middle of the road at the intersection of Kingshighway and Lindell Boulevard; when the road was redesigned, the monument was moved to its present location near the intersection.
