The sculpture is one of a pair created for the Leisy Brewery in 1949-1950. The bears were donated to the
zoo
by Herb Leisy in 1964. IAS files contain related information from Jane Boruff Tesso's "William M. McVey A Life in Sculpture: Retrospective Exhibition,"
Cleveland
, OH: Case Western University, Mather Gallery, 1988. The SOS! survey reported the media of the horns as bronze, but the Tesso publication noted the horns were made of lead.
