Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, Administration/Maintenance, 4101 Fulton Parkway, Brookside Road entrance, Cleveland, Ohio 44144
    Provenance:
Formerly located Leisy Brewing Company, Train & Fulton Roads, Entrance, Cleveland, Ohio until 1962 or 1963.
    Remarks:
The sculpture is one of a pair created for the Leisy Brewery in 1949-1950. The bears were donated to the zoo by Herb Leisy in 1962 or 1963. IAS files contain related information from Jane Boruff Tesso's "William M. McVey A Life in Sculpture: Retrospective Exhibition," Cleveland, OH: Case Western University, Mather Gallery, 1988 and the Cleveland Zoological Society's Zoo News (May 1965). The 1965 issue of Zoo News pictures one polar bear on the cover and notes on the inside that the bear is one of two; however, the SOS volunteer was only able to locate one. This bear was moved to the Brookside Road Entrance in 1981. The 1965 issue of Zoo News also mentions that the bear is located at the front entrance to the zoo's new Administration-Education Center. The Campen publication mentions that the bear was acquired by the zoo in 1968.
