Inscription:  (Sculpture, back proper right corner:) H MATZEN (possibly a date, but unreadable) (Base, front:) RICHARD WAGNER (Base, marble plaque on back:) DER STADT CLEVELAND/GEWIDMET VOM/GOETHE - SCHILLER-VEREIN/OKT. 15, 1911 signed Description:  A standing portrait of German composer Richard Wagner holding papers and a pair of gloves in his proper left hand. He has a beard and is dressed in a long jacket with an overcoat and hat. The sculpture rests on a tall base adorned with carved flowers at each upper corner. Remarks:  The sculpture was a gift to the City of Cleveland by the Goethe and Schiller Society. The cost was $8,000. The Cleveland Lakefront State Park was formerly known as Edgewater Park. In 1978, the sculpture and the park were acquired by the State of Ohio, Department of Natural Resources.
