    Description: 
    The sculpture depicts Booker T. Washington "lifting the veil of ignorance." Washington is seen standing, dressed in suit with coat, vest and bow-tie. He lifts a shroud with his proper right hand from over the head of a younger black man seated on an anvil. Behind him and to his proper right is a plow. The seated man holds a book in his lap.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture is installed on the front steps of Atlanta's first African-American secondary school. The sculpture was commissioned under the guidance of the school's first principal, Charles L. Harper, who in 1924 organized a group of civic leaders to provide funding for the sculpture.

    Treated 2000 May. Theodore Monnich Sculpture Conservation (Columbia, SC) Treatment report is on file with City of Atlanta, Bureau of Cultural Affairs, Public Art Program.
