Remarks:
The sculpture, created sometime between 1917 and 1937, first came to
Muncie
as part of an American sculpture exhibition funded by the
Ball
family at the
Ball
State
Museum of Art in 1937. The sculpture was placed on permanent loan to
Ball
State
Museum of Art after it was purchased by Frank C.
Ball
, one of the original five
Ball
brothers who donated the land on which
Ball
State
was founded. The sculpture was later placed in storage because it was in need of restoration, but in 1993, it was restored and reinstalled in a new fountain basin designed by Rundell Ernstberger Associates and constructed by Oberle Construction. According to campus folklore, students used to rub the child's nose for good luck before exams.
