    Description: 
    Twelve benches, each one inset with ceramic tile portraying aspects of a local tree, shrub or flower. The benches are Bloodroot, Columbine, Eastern Dogwood, Eastern White Oak, Loblolly Pine, Pawpaw, Poison Ivy, Pokeweed, Rose Mallow, Sassafras, Tobacco, and Tuliptree. Each of the twelve benches has an inscription etched into a strip of naval bronze 1-1/2 x 60 inches, set into the concrete bench top. The inscriptions relate to local folklore, Indian traditions, and quotes from Maryland poets.

    Remarks: 
    A collaborative project between the artist and 92 fourth and fifth grade students at Mutual Elementary School, Port Republic, Maryland. The students made the ceramic tiles inset into the benches. The benches were made by the artist and Superior Concrete and installed by Evard, Inc. Teaches involved were Stacy Criss, Ersaline Hammett, Iszetta Johnson, Lori Moscati and Beth Beighley. IAS files contain related newspaper clipping from The Calvert Independent, Nov. 2, 1994, a 1995 brochure entitled "Talking Benches for Annmarie Garden," and transcription of bench inscription plaques.
