Jackson
Town Square/since 1960. The antlers are from elk that winter on the/National Elk Refuge. About 7,500 elk spend each winter on/the refuge. The bulls shed their antlers each spring. Antlers/are picked up by local Boy Scouts and/sold by public auction in this square/each May. All four arches were built/by the
Jackson
Hole Rotary Club./The arches/are here for all to enjoy

Description:
Four arches composed of stacks of elk antlers form archways in a park. A single pair of moose antlers that is used as a sign hangs from the top of each arch by chains.

Remarks:
An arch covers each of the four entrances to the
Jackson
Town Square. Rotarians built the first elkhorn arch on the southwest corner of the square in 1953 or 1954. The arch on the northeast corner of the square was vandalized and was completely rebuilt by the
Jackson
Rotary Club. The antlers are collected from the National Elk Refuge, where bulls shed them each spring. Antlers are replaced when they break or are stolen. Some antlers are quite old and naturally deteriorate. IAS files contain related articles from:
