    Remarks:
The sculpture honors the memory of Racine's soldiers who fought during the Civil War. At the suggestion of Lemuel C. Porter, commander of the Governor Harvey Post No. 17, G. A. R., the organization formed the Racine Soldiers' Monument Association for the purpose of procuring a sculpture to honor those who served. The $8,000 cost of the sculpture was raised over three years through personal subscriptions, concerts, suppers, the sale of lithographs, and a six-day fair held at the Belle City Hall in 1881. The sculpture was dedicated on July 4, 1884, which was also the Semi-Centennial anniversary of the founding of Racine.
The Journal Times (Racine, Wisconsin), June 30, 1984 says the monument was designed by C. Allen Campbell, artist and architect from Kansas City, Missouri. The monument design is also attributed to J. Allen Campbell, Ryegate, Vermont. The base was fabricated and installed by the Ryegate Granite Company of South Ryegate, Vermont, owned by R. F. Carter. Alex Barrata was the carver.
IAS files contain a copy of Racine Common Council Resolution No. 4435-E, Nov. 16, 1976 approving the sculpture; and articles from the Racine Review, Nov. 15, 1929, pg. 6 and the Racine Journal Times, June 30, 1984, pg. 5, and June 28, 1984. On November 16, 1976, the Racine Common Council passed a resolution affirming the designation of the sculpture as a landmark by the Racine Landmarks Preservation Commission.
