Description:
Built against a hillside is a rock garden featuring a lily pond and ornamental items including an open wishing well, windmills, a birdhouse, and fountains. A miniature bridge spans the pond and is large enough to support the weight of visitors. The objects are made from rocks and thousands of bits of broken glass in many different colors set in cement. At the entrance to the garden are two tall pillars also in colored glass with a mirror mounted on each of them. Different kinds and colors of mosses, cacti, wild plants and flowers grow throughout the garden and in between chinks in the rocks.

Remarks:
The artist, a retired farmer, started the rock garden as a hobby after moving to
Fountain
City
with his wife. He built the garden throughout the 1930s using a variety of rocks found on

roadsides and hills. A few of the rocks were brought by the Mehringers from the Badlands of the Dakotas and parts of the state of Washington. Visitors can walk through the garden and across the miniature bridge that spans the lily pond. IAS files contain an article from the
