Description:
A tall, rectangular, gray toned-monument which curves to a point at the top. The front and back are smooth and flat, while the sides are rough. Incised in relief on the front is the figure of Hugh McConkey, dean of
Wheeling
sandlot baseball, swinging a bat (proper right profile). Below McConkey is an inscription.

The monument was erected soon after McConkey's death in 1939 and stood at the northeast corner of the City-County Building until the building was razed in 1956. At that time the monument was moved to its present location on
Wheeling
Island, near the
