    Description: 
    A horse and rider standing at rest. The male figure atop the horse turns his head to the proper left and gazes passively at the ground. His proper left hand rests at the base of the horse's neck, holding the reins. His proper right arm is held at his side and he holds a wide brimmed hat in his proper right hand. He wears a long overcoat, open at the front, with a vest or coat underneath. The horse stands with head erect and turned slightly to the proper right. The horse appears to be waiting for a command from the rider. The sculpture stands on a plinth which is atop a large mound of earth. The mound of earth is covered with large stones with flowers planted in between.

    Remarks: 
    Henry Gassaway Davis was a prominent West Virginia businessmand and politician. Bronze plaque in front of sculpture reads: HENRY GASSAWAY DAVIS/BORN NOVEMBER 16, 1823/DIED MARCH 11, 1916/BENEFACTOR - PHILANTHROPIST/RAILWAY BUILDER/WORKED AS IF HE WERE TO LIVE FOREVER/LIVED AS IF HE WERE TO DIE TO-MORROW. IAS files contain related articles from Elkins Inter-Mountain (Elkins, WV): Feb. 9, 1927, pg. 1; July 9, 1927, pg. 1; Sept. 24, 1927, pg. 1; Oct. 14, 1927, pg. 1; and Oct. 17, 1927, pg. 1-8. IAS files include copy of Dec. 12, 1925 contract with American Art Foundry and Louis Saint Lanne and subsequent 1926 correspondence with between the foundry and Lanne. The sculpture is identical to one located in Davis Park, Charleston, West Virginia (WV000019).
