    Description: 
    A figure of a bearded, uniformed Confederate soldier stands at parade rest with his proper left foot extended slightly. Both hands grasp the barrel of his gun which rests between his legs, the butt by his feet. He wears a brimmed hat, backpack, and has a bedroll slung over his proper left shoulder crossing to the proper right side of his waist. A canteen is by his proper left hip, strapped over his proper right shoulder. The soldier is placed atop a square base which rests on top of three steps. The back of the square base is engraved with two crossed swords.

    Remarks: 
    The monument was erected in memory of the Confederate soldiers of Nelson County by a committee appointed by the Board of Supervisors of Nelson County in 1962. The monument cost $5,600 and was paid for with appropriations from the following: Virginia General Assembly, $2,000; Civil War Commission, $400; Nelson County Board of Supervisors, $1,000; Gift from Mr. T. Bland Harvey, $700; Lovington District, $549.10; Massies Mil District, $273; Schuyler District, $49.50. IAS files contain an excerpt from "County History 1964-1965" and an unidentified excerpt which lists the names of Civil War soldiers from Nelson County.
