John Alexander Logan, 1826-1886, was a Civil War general who was instrumental in initiating the observance of Memorial Day and in finding homes for Civil War veterans. The statue is to commemorate his war contribution, his establishment of Memorial Day, and his work as Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic.
