    Description: 
    Life-size figure of a miner against a roughly formed pillar that comes up to his thigh. His left arm lacks the detail of form, which is present on the proper right arm. Detail of the proper right arm ends at the wrist as it blends into the pillar. The legs of the figure are in relief against the pillar.

    Remarks: 
    The figure was sculpted for the courthouse in Deadwood, SD, but was rejected because of a flaw in the stone. The figure was never dedicated. From 1984 to 1994, the figure was located in Hot Springs at 709 Happy Hollow Street. Previously, it was located at 2027 Washington Avenue from 1973 to 1980. From 1900 to 1973, it was located at the Duennerman Ranch, west of Smithwick, SD. According to the Fall River County Historical Society, the miner once held a pick, and had a lantern on his head.
