Description:
Standing female figure wearing an ankle length dress and moccasins. Her proper right foot is forward, her proper left hand is by her side in a fist, and her proper right hand holds a canoe paddle. Her hair is braided, with the braids falling forward over her shoulders.

Remarks:
Inscription on nearby plaque reads: Legend of Tetonkaha/Near Oakwood Lakes Lie/Some Earthworks Thrown Up/By Soldiers in 1862. An/Indian Maiden Names/Tetonkaha is said to have/Warned Her Soldier Lover/And Saved the Fort From a/Sioux Attack. For This/Her Tribe Threw Her into/the Lake Which Now Bears/Her Name./Sculptor/M. Krete Kendall Miller/Gift of/Class of 1931. IAS files contain a copy of the

, SD), Feb. 26, 1987; an unidentified newspaper article discussing the legend of Tetonkaha, a letter of correspondence with a conservator, a museum cataloging sheet, and a press release, all from the
South
Dakota
Art Museum files.
Sculpture
was removed from its site for restoration work in 1985. Vandals had tipped the statue off its concrete base, causing the head to be broken off and the body to break at the knees.
Sculpture
was restored and returned to the Sylvan Theatre in 1987.
