Remarks:
Fountain was purchased in the 1920s or 1930s. Its design was selected by John F. Sifley, who had a copy made of a fountain he had seen in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The fountain was originally installed in
Orangeburg
's Memorial Plaza in the center of the city; but sometime after World War II, ca. 1947-1948, it was removed from the square and replaced by a Confederate monument. It was put it in storage for several years and then in 1959, reinstalled and rededicated in Edisto Gardens, renamed at the time Edisto Memorial Gardens. Originally, the fountain was flanked by two smaller pools with cranes spouting water from upturned beaks, but they are missing from present location. IAS files contain transcription of text on basin wall and related articles from Times and Democrat (
Orangeburg
, SC), Dec. 1, 1968 and May 1, 1992.
