    Remarks:
The sculpture commemorates Jay G. Francis (1870-1958), the founder of Elizabethtown College. Francis was a free minister, educator, historian, and genealogist. In 1898, he bicycled throughout central and eastern Pennsylvania, Delaware, and the Eastern Shore of Maryland, taking photographs of Church of Bretheren meeting houses. Along the way, he elicited support from church leaders for establishing what would become Elizabethtown College. The sculpture was funded by friends of the College in honor of the College's 100th anniversary (1999). Nearby plaque reads: As Jay G. Francis acted on an idea, and a college was born, you may act on your idea and change even the world.
