The mother is kneeling and facing to the front; the father looks toward the west with his proper right hand raise to shield his eyes from the sun. The sculpture is carved from a block of marble composed of six smaller blocks. The back is carved with a map of the area covered by the Oregon Trail, and scenes of pioneer life.
