    Remarks:
The memorial was commissioned by the State of Ohio in honor Ohio frontiersman Simon Kenton (1755-1836). Although he was originally buried at New Jerusalem in Logan County, though an act of the Ohio Legislature his remains were transferred to Urbana in 1865, and fund raising for a memorial was initiated. It is thought that the memorial was designed through a collaboration with Ward and Hunt. In 1884, the stone base was installed, but the bronze sculpture of Kenton that was designed by Ward was not completed at that time, due to lack of funds. In 1997, a group of citizens formed the Simon Kenton Historic Corridor committee and raised $30,000 to complete the memorial that was started 113 years earlier. The group commissioned local artist Mike Major to sculpt a full size version of Ward's 27 inch statuette of Kenton created in 1843. The statuette was a gift from Ward's widow to the Champaign County Library. IAS files contain copy of the Champaign County Preservation Alliance brochure "Simon Kenton Historic Corridor"; News Sun (Springfield, OH), Nov. 3, 1947; Oct. 7, 1996, pg. 9-12; July 2, 1997; and July 5, 1997. IAS image files contain pre-1997 and post 1997 images of the memorial.
