    Remarks:
John Carroll (1735-1815), a Jesuit priest, was the first clergyman appointed a bishop in the United States. He was bishop and then archbishop of Baltimore from 1790 until 1815. The artist's version of Carroll's nose is the slender, aquiline nose of Carroll as a young man. The bust was created for the John Carroll University's 1985-1986 Centennial and was a gift of the Nathan L. Dauby Charity Fund and the Robert D. Gries family. IAS files contain copy of newspaper article from the Plain Dealer (Cleveland, OH), Feb. 27, 1984, pg. 1-D, 3-D, which discusses clay model of bust.
