    Description: 
    Figure of a uniformed Union soldier stands atop a tall tapered shaft. The figure wears a long coat and holds his rifle in front of him, butt to the ground, both hands around the muzzle. A relief of an eagle on a shield appears on the lower front of the shaft. The names of five battles in which Washington County soldiers participated, appears in raised lettering on the shaft.

    Remarks: 
    An iron fence was placed around the monument in 1877. A Parrott gun was placed on a stone block in each corner in 1880. These were procured by General Warner of Marietta, then a United States Congressman. IAS files include references to the book, "The History of Marietta," by Thomas J. Summers, pg. 309, an article from the Parkersburg News, Jan. 16, 1966 by Geraldine Muscari and "The Birthplace of the Northwest Territory," a 1938 Sesquicentennial publication.
