    (On leg:) Stanley O. Johnson (Circular plaque on ground with 8 star points:) Site/of/Old Main - The first building at the University of North Dakota/Erected in 1883. It served the State/and generations of students for 80 years./Home of lofty thought and learning./Beacon O'er our western land./Shine whence still the ever burning/torch is passes from hand to hand. (At points of star: names of UND Presidents who occupied Old Main) signed
    Description: 
    A steel sphere, 7 ft. in diameter, is held in the air by four "legs" which rise vertically from the ground, then bend into the center to support the globe. Overblazed with bronze, the sphere consists of a thin rod frame, laced with 29 figures from 9 to 15 in. high, in various positions "symbolizing the educational development of man." A raised design produced by a welding method covers the legs.
