(On south side of shaft:) "TO LIVE IN HEARTS, WE LEAVE BEHIND, IS NOT TO DIE." (On east side of shaft:) NEITHER HUNGER, THIRST, NOR OFFERED BRIBES, AFFECTED THEIR LOYALTY
    Description: 
    A gray granite figure of a Civil War soldier holding his rifle vertically in front of him with both hands resting on the barrel and the rifle butt resting by his feet. He stands with his left leg forward and his left foot extending over the base. He wears a small cap and a long coat with a short cape thrown back over his right shoulder. The soldier stands atop a tall gray granite shaft that is adorned on each corner with a polished black granite column. The front of the shaft is adorned with a bronze image of the Maine state seal. Around the foot of the shaft are four polished black granite mortars, one at each corner.

    Remarks: 
    The memorial was erected by the state of Maine in honor of Maine soldiers who lost their lives while prisoners of war at Salisbury, North Carolina. IAS files contain a copy of the Report of the Maine Commissioners on the Monument Erected at Salisbury, N.C., 1908.
