Description:
A standing figure of a Civil War soldier on picket duty. The soldier once held a rifle in his hands, but the rifle is now missing. The
sculpture
stands atop a dark granite base made with large rocks of granite. A bronze inscription plaque in the shape of scroll is installed on the side of the granite base. The plaque bears a small relief of the battleship Maine sinking in the Havana Harbor, and an inscription dedicated to Newell H. Rising, a soldier who died when the U.S.S. Maine was sunk.

Remarks:
The statue of the Civil War soldier was erected by the Charles Lawrence Post No. 378, G.A.R. in honor of those from
Rye
who died in the Civil War. The soldier was designed by George Beck from a sketch by George E. Jardine. George Beck also designed the base plaque honoring Newell H. Rising who died during the Spanish American War. The base inscription plaque installed in 1898. IAS files contain newspaper articles from the Port Chester Journal, May 31, 1888; May 18, 1898; and June 2, 1898 and the Port Chester Item, June 13, 1966.
