    Remarks:
George Clinton (1739-1812) was the first Governor of New York and Vice President under Presidents Jefferson and Madison. The erection of the sculpture was initiated by Miss Mary H. Skeel. It was cast from the same mold used to cast the statue of George Clinton which stands in the Rotunda of the United States Capitol (IAS 75002337). Henry K. Bush-Brown, nephew to Henry Kirke Brown who executed the original piece, arranged for the Newburgh piece to be cast and erected for $3,000. The funds were raised through public subscription. The sculpture was originally installed at a site known as Clinton Square, at the intersection of Colden, South Water & Water Streets. The sculpture was moved when this site was targeted for an urban renewal project. It was in City storage from July 1970 to July 1974 when it was installed in its current site. In 1989, the work was restored by the Newburgh Historical Society and the inscription was redone by Warren Trent. The Third Street & Fullerton Avenue site was rededicated as Clinton Park on July 30, 1989. IAS files contain a dedication booklet entitled "Unveiling of the Statue of George Clinton," (Newburgh, NY), 1896 and related articles from the Newburgh Evening News, Dec. 13, 1969, Nov. 8, 1971, Aug. 1, 1989, and Aug. 6, 1989; the Middletown Times Herald Record, May 25, 1970; and the Orange County Free Press, Aug. 1, 1972.
