A downward pointing rifle hangs from his proper right shoulder. The figure leans with his upraised proper right arm, against a wall with rough-hewn edges. Remarks:
Erected by the Orange County Veterans Memorial Committee for $60,000. The idea for the sculpture was initiated around 1985 by Michael Krawetz, who wanted to erect a memorial to his friend Jack Wolpe, who was killed in Vietnam. Mr. Krawetz's efforts became the subject of a New York Post article and of an episode of the television series "Highway to Heaven." Partial funding was secured through the Citizens Advisory Panel of the New York State Power Authority Marcy-South grant program. Additional funding was raised through public subscription, including a "phone-a-thon" held after the broadcast of the "Highway to Heaven" episode. David McTamaney, a military journalist who served in Vietnam, lead the effort to collect and verify the 820 names of Orange County residents who served in the twentieth century's four major wars which appear on the plaque.
