    Remarks:
Erected by the Ladies Auxiliary of the Firemens' Association. An informal dedication was held on Sept. 30, 1909 at the home of the sculptor at Broadway & Concord Street, where the work was sited while waiting to be installed in Downing Park. A local resident, Rufus Hobbs, posed for the sculpture with his daughter, Winifred Hobbs Buechner. Members of the Firemens' Association were reportedly unhappy with the finished work because the figure resembled Mr. Hobbs too closely. The sculptor reportedly altered the features at the request of the Association. Although the sculpture remains at its original site, there is a possibility that it once faced south towards 3rd Street. IAS files contain related articles from the Newburgh Daily News, Sept. 30, 1909 and May 31, 1910 and the Evening News (Newburgh, NY), Feb. 24, 1971.
