Remarks:
The monument originally consisted of just the shaft with its profile relief and decorative cap. The relief was executed by John Frazee and the wreath and cap were the work of John Henderson. The work was erected through the efforts of Gilbert Vale and funded through public subscription. Mr. Vale, a great admirer of Thomas Paine, was inspired to erect the memorial after visiting Paine's gravesite in 1837. The site was in a state of disrepair, and had been since Paine's remains were stolen in 1819. The memorial did not stand on the gravesite, but closely nearby. It was cleaned, restored and rededicated by the Liberal Club of
New
York
City in 1881. The bronze bust was added in 1899. In 1905, the monument was moved to its current site, slightly north of where it had been installed. On Oct. 14, 1905, the monument was formally presented to and accepted by the City of
