    Description: 
    Obelisk which stands on a square base bears a bas-relief bust of William Leggett. The figure is seen in proper left profile and is encircled within a wreath. There is a bas-relief of a lyre near the top of the obelisk.

    Remarks: 
    Commissioned by the Young Men's General Committee of New York City's Democratic Party in memory of William Leggett, part-owner of the New York Evening Post. The SOS! survey lists the media as granite; and the text from "John Frazee, Sculptor, 1790-1852," lists the media as marble. The sculpture is the subject of a poem written by James Greenleaf Whittier.
