    Remarks:
Commissioned by the City of Mount Vernon under the auspices of the William R. Carmer Camp No. 8, United Spanish War Veterans. Charles Keck sculpted the relief on the base which was cast from metal recovered from the U.S.S. Maine. Vermont Quarries donated the granite for the base. The foundation was built by the Mount Vernon Department of Public Works. The final cost was $6,000 which was raised through popular donation. Although the Camp received permission from the City Board of Aldermen to erect a memorial in March 1912, the movement to do so was not initiated until May 1926. The sculpture was dedicated in a small ceremony June 14, 1927. The larger ceremony was postponed to June 25 so that it would not conflict with the celebrations of the return of Charles Lindbergh from his transatlantic solo flight. Monsignor Chidwick, chaplain aboard the U.S.S. Maine, was the guest speaker. The sculpture originally stood at MacArthur Circle at Gramatan & Lincoln Avenues. It was moved to Hartley Park in 1973.
