Remarks:
Edward Joseph Dunn (1866-1927) was a banker and principle in the Chemung Canal Bank. He oversaw the combination of that institution with
Elmira
Trust. His banking interests lead him to the inventor Victor Bendix, who he had the forethought to finance with his Bendix starter gear, a principle of automobile and aircraft components to the present day. Mr. Dunn was civic minded, and a leader on the Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis, Rotary Club, Elks and Knights of Columbus. When the home of the local professional baseball team teetered on insolvency, Mr. Dunn purchased the property and established a not-for-profit corporation to perpetuate the beloved enterprise. A grateful posterity named the ball park after him, and erected this
sculpture
created by Ernfred Anderson (1896-1983). Mr. Anderson was a native of
Elmira
,
New
York
. He held local posts as the Director of the Arnot Art Gallery and was a Professor of Art at
Elmira
College, and taught casting at Cornell University. He studied in Switzerland at the University of Lausanne, and was accomplished in drawing, painting and
sculpture
. Dunn Field burned down in 1938, and was replaced by the present structure in 1939; the
sculpture
was dedicated in 1940. Dunn Field, home of the
Elmira
Pioneers, has played host to numerous sporting events and concerts through the years. One of the most notable events occurred in 1951 when Don Zimmer, later to play for and mange several big league baseball clubs, and his wife were married on the field. Dunn Field is located on the banks of the Chemung River, and the river and surrounding hills provide a pleasant backdrop beyond the outfield fence.
At the time of the Save
Outdoor
Sculpture
survey, the bronze bust and plaque were missing, though the granite base remained standing in front of the main entrance to Dunn Field. At some point the bust and plaque were returned to the granite base.
