Inscription:  ROBERT AITKEN (On plaque, northeast side of lower base:) "1924"/"THE SKIRMISHER/ROBERT I. AITKEN ARTIST/DESIGNATED A HISTORIC LANDMARK/BY THE BINGHAMTON COMMISSION ON/ARCHITECTURE URBAN DESIGN" signed Description:  A Spanish-American War soldier runs with proper left foot planted on the ground and proper right foot in the air behind him. He carries a rifle in his arms. He is dressed in a wide-brimmed hat tilted to the proper right, a shirt with the sleeves rolled up, and knee-length boots. Foliage is near the back of his proper left foot. The circular bronze base of the sculpture is decorated with a leaf design. The sculpture is mounted atop a circular stone base with a fluted upper section and a bottom step. Barber Camp 3, United Spanish War Veterans, and $9,000 from the Broome County Board of Supervisors. The sculpture was dedicated on July 14, 1925 during the state encampment of United Spanish War Veterans in Binghamton. In 1958, the city moved the sculpture six feet to the west in order to improve traffic flow.
