Remarks:
George F. Johnson came to
Binghamton
,
New
York
from Massachusetts in his twenties to work for the Lester Brothers Boot and Shoe Company. He later became head of the entire operation, which grew into the Endicott-Johnson Company, and became one of the area's largest employers. The monument was commissioned by the Endicott-Johnson Company as a tribute to its founder. The monument was installed when George F. Johnson was 65 years old, but the
sculpture
depicts him as a younger man. Local resident, Dorothy Joggerst, modeled for the figure of the girl. IAS files contain an excerpt from Gerald R. Smith's "The Valley of Opportunity: A Pictorial History of the Greater
Binghamton
Area," Norfolk, VA: The Donning Company, 1988, pg. 141.
