Provenance:
Formerly administered by Center for the Advancement of Human Dignity, 1971-1983.
Remarks:
Commissioned by Dr. Victor Westphall Jr. and family in memory of Victor David Westphall III, who was killed in Vietnam in 1968. Originally dedicated in 1971, the memorial was administered by the Center for the Advancement of Human Dignity, of which Dr. Westphall was president. The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) began funding the monument in 1977. The DAV formed a separate corporation in 1982 to assume responsibility for the monument, beginning in May 1983. The historical marker at entrance to the monument at Highway 64 reads: "DAV Vietnam Veterans National Memorial. This chapel was erected in 1968 by Dr. Victor Westphall in memory of his son and all other U.S. personnel killed in the fighting in Vietnam. It was first dedicated as the Vietnam Veterans Peace and Brotherhood Chapel, and on May 30, 1983, it was rededicated as DAV Vietnam Veterans National Memorial." IAS files include a brochure from the Memorial and a brief history of the work by Dr. Westphall.
