    (Plaque on front of each base, raised:) PRESENTED TO THE CITIZENS OF ESSEX COUNTY/BY THE PRUDENTIAL INSURANCE COMPANY OF AMERICA/FROM 1892 TO 1958, MORE THAN HALF A CENTURY, THIS LION, WITH/ITS TWIN COMPANION, SCULPTURED BY KARL BITTER, STOOD GUARD/OVER THE DOORWAY OF THE FIRST PRUDENTIAL BUILDING IN NEWARK/AT 763 BROAD STREET, CORNER OF BANK STREET. THEY HAVE WITNESSED/THE GROWTH OF NEWARK FROM A TOWN TO A METROPOLIS.
