    Description: 
    A granite wall with a bronze relief medallion bust of Revolutionary War hero Brig. Gen. Hugh Mercer in the center, flanked by two rectangular bronze relief panels. The left plaque shows Mercer leading his troops in a surprise attack on the Hessians at Trenton on December 25, 1776. The right plaque shows him refusing to surrender and receiving his mortal wounds in Princeton on Jan. 3, 1777. Two outer panels, later additions to the memorial, depict the burning of the British ship Augusta on Oct. 23, 1777; and the Hessians attacking Fort Mercer on Oct. 22, 1777, with Colonel Christopher Green in command of defenders.

    Remarks: 
    IAS files contain articles from Gloucester County Times, Oct. 26, 1970 and Oct. 14, 1976. The memorial and its three central plaques were a gift from the St. Andrews Society of Philadelphia, of which Mercer was a member. The Society was founded in 1747 to aid Scottish emigrants in distress. Mercer joined the Society in 1757. The memorial was executed by Carl Lindborg and dedicated Oct. 1970. Sometime between 1970 and 1976, the memorial was vandalized. Newly engraved lettering and stonework, the work of Ed English, was added in 1976; as were two new bronze plaques, a gift from an anonymous donor.
