    Description: 
    A standing Civil War soldier holding the barrel of his rifle with both hands. The soldier has a moustache and is dressed in a long overcoat with a cape. The sculpture is mounted on a tall square shaft base. The upper section of the base is decorated with relief scrolls and stars. On the front of the base is a relief of a wreath with a sword through it. The monument is surrounded by a wrought iron fence. On either side of the fence are two large canons.

    Remarks: 
    The cost of erecting the monument was $4,000 which was funded by a subscription sponsored by the Evening News. A box containing a various papers including a Hackensack Bank bill bearing the portrait of Edwin Augustus Stevens were placed in the cornerstone of the base. The cannons placed on either side of the sculpture were taken from the war ship "Portsmouth." In 1955, Hudson Square Park was renamed Stevens Park. IAS files contain an excerpt from John J. Heaney's "The Bicentennial Comes to Hoboken."
