Description:
A granite stele with three bronze plaques. The left text plaque includes a relief scene of a World War I artillery battery in action, with three cannons. In the foreground, a soldier lies wounded or dead near the first artillery battery. Below the relief scene is text. The central text plaque is decorated with emblems of the three branches of the Armed Services. The right text plaque is decorated with the military badges of the U.S. Army, Coast Guard, Air Force, Marine Corps and Navy. Remarks:
In 1919, a vote was taken to see if the town would raise money to place "suitable tablets" bearing the names of those who fought in the Civil War, Spanish War, and World War I. $200 was appropriated in 1920, and Liberty Bronze Works fabricated the plaque. It was mounted on a boulder on the front lawn of the public library. After World War II, a second plaque was added honoring World War II dead. In 1992, voters approved use of private funds in the amount of $5,287,80 to restore the two older plaques and to add a
new
plaque honoring veterans from the Korean, Vietnam and Persian Gulf Wars. The restoration of the two older plaques and the fabrication of the
new
plaque were done by Laconia Monument Company. A
new
granite base was created for the three plaques. IAS files contain transcription of names on plaques. IAS files contain articles from The Laconia Democrat, June 4, 1920, pg. 4; and The Meredith News, June 3, 1992,pg. 1, 10. IAS files contain excerpts from the "Annual Report of the Town of
