    Remarks:
The monument is dedicated to the memory of Civil War soldiers, and was created through the efforts of the Ben Harrison Circle No. 42 Ladies of the G.A.R., and assisted by the Seward Post No. 3, Grand Army of the Republic, Chancellorsville. The site for the monument was selected by Civil War veterans. The sculptor originally made the head of the sculpture larger to be viewed from the top of a dome, but it met with criticism and was reduced. SOS! report listed media for the base as granite, but an attached article lists the base as marble. IAS files contain transcriptions of five nearby plaques that surround the monument and that are dedicated to the Seward County men and women who gave their lives during the following wars: World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, and the Persian Gulf War. IAS files contain newsclippings that give background on the monument and describe its dedication.
