    Remarks:
The War Angel was sculpted while the artist was a federal prisoner at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas "as atonement for his misdeeds." It was presented to the park by the War Mothers of Linn County and dedicated as a tribute to American motherhood and in honor of General John J. Pershing. The sculpture originally included the figure holding a "torch of liberty" in her right hand. The plaque on the base was added in 1955 by the Missouri Chapter of American War Mothers. IAS files contain related articles from the Laclede Blade (Laclede, MO), Oct. 25 & Nov. 2, 1940; and a related unidentified clipping.
