Remarks:
Louis Brandeis was an American jurist who served as an associate justice on the U.S. Supreme Court from 1916-1939 and was noted for his devotion to free speech. He later founded Brandeis University. The
sculpture
was commissioned by Lawrence E. Wein, a trustee of Brandeis University, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Louis Brandeis. The inscription on a nearby plaque reads: LOUIS DEMBITZ BRANDEIS/1856-1941/DEDICATED DURING THE CENTENNIAL YEAR/BY/THE HONORABLE EARL WARREN/CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE UNITED STATES/COMMISSIONED BY LAWRENCE A. WIEN/SCULPTOR ROBERT BERKS.
