Description:
A rectangular bronze inscription plaque is adorned at the top with a relief depicting the Monitor and the Merrimac engaged in battle with smoke pouring from each vessel. The plaque is attached to a rectangular granite stele.

Remarks:
The plaque commemorates the
North
Adams
Iron Company and John Adam Beckley who ran the company from 1858 to 1862. The plaque was sponsored by Clara Beckley, John Adam Beckley's granddaughter, who wanted to commemorate the company's roll in producing the iron plates used to construct the Monitor, a ship made famous for its Civil War battle with the Merrimac.
