Description:
The memorial depicts a flag bearer standing between kneeling figures of a soldier and sailor holding rifles. The flag bearer holds up the flagpole with both hands, the flag billowing around his head. On his proper right is a kneeling soldier holding a rifle across his lap and wearing a cap with a shamrock on the crown. On the proper left of the flag bearer is a kneeling sailor pointing a rifle. The
sculpture
rests atop a square stone base in a small plaza at the top of a flight of steps. The back of the plaza is surrounded by a stone wall containing inscription plaques.

The inscription plaque on the floor of the plaza reads:
MALDEN
'S PART IN THE WAR FOR THE UNION/832 MEN ARE CREDITED ON RECORD/23 KILLED AND DIED OF WOUNDS 23 SERVED IN REGULAR ARMY/13 DIED IN CONFEDERATE PRISONS 21 IN THE VETERANS RESERVE CORPS/28 DIED OF DISEASE IN SERVICE 113 CREDITED TO THE NAVY/74 DISCHARGED FOR DISABILITY 184 RECORDS NOT COMPLETE/353 DISCHARGED AT EXPIRATION OF SERVICE/1860-5865 POPULATION 1865-6875.
The memorial was funded by the City of
Malden
with contributions from the
Malden
Chapter of the Sons of the Revolution,
Malden
Historical Society, and Deliverance Monroe Chapter of the Daughters of the Revolution. The total cost of the monument ws $15,000. IAS files contain an Oct. 3, 1994 press release from the National Memorial Trust announcing that they have received a grant to restore the
