    Description: 
    This memorial consists of three allegorical bronze female figures mounted on a large granite base. At the top is a standing female figure representing the City of Lynn. She is dressed in long classical drapery and on her head she wears a crown resembling city wall with gates and battlements. With her proper right hand she offer a laurel wreath of victory and honor to her citizens. Below on her proper right side is a seated female figure representing War. She wears a helmet on her head and is dressed in classical drapery and chain male with epaulets shaped like lion heads. In her proper right hand she holds a shield and spear, and in her proper left hand she offers a laurel wreath. Seated on the opposite side of the base is a female figure representing Justice. She holds the scales of justice in her proper left hand,and once held a sword in her proper right hand, but it is now missing. She is dressed in classical drapery and wears a wreath of oak leaves on her head. The base is oblong and is adorned with plain recessed panels.

    Remarks: 
    In May of 1869, Lynn's Post #5 of the Grand Army of the Republic established a committee to look into the construction of a monument to the city's Civil War dead. By 1871, the Common Council of Lynn had appropriated $30,000 for the memorial and the artist was selected. IAS files contain newspaper articles from The Boston Globe, May 30, 1994, pg. 13-15; the Lynn Evening Item, May 22, 1918, pg. 9; the Lynn Semi-Weekly Reporter, Sept. 20, 1873, pg. 1-2; and a copy of the Massachusetts Historical Commission Form C - Monuments questionnaire.
