Description:
A portrait of Claude Debussy with bearded face, head leaning on his proper left hand, and cane held in his extended proper right hand. This waist-length portrait emerges from the top of a contemporary, open-work design. The front of the open-work is adorned with small figures of a man and a woman dancing and the back is adorned with another male-female couple accompanied by a bearded old man. The entire
sculpture
is slightly curved and rests on a curved granite base. Below the base is a rectangular concrete pad.

Remarks:
The Debussy
sculpture
was funded by the Claude Debussy Trust Fund, Inc. The idea for the Debussy
sculpture
was conceived in 1985 by Prof. Jacqueline Charette of the College of Fine Arts at the University of
Massachusetts
. She was inspired after seeing a
sculpture
of Chopin in London. She contacted Mico Kaufman and assembled a committee of supporters. In 1989, Ms. Charette and a
Lowell
based group, the Friends of Debussy's Music, contacted French officials to discuss casting a second
sculpture
for Debussy's home town of St. Germain en Laye, a suburb of Paris.IAS files contain an article from the University of
