Description:
An abstract kinetic
sculpture
overlooking the confluence of the Pawtucket Canal and the Concord River symbolizes the role that water power played in the development of
Lowell
. The
sculpture
consists of vertical rectangular units formed by metal rods constructed in a pyramid arrangement. Forty copper colored steel cubes are suspended from crossbars inside each rectangular unit. Dozens of fountain jets spray water against the cubes, spinning them in all directrions. The
sculpture
is installed on a flat concrete base in the middle of a stone plaza.

In 1986, the model for the
sculpture
was unveiled and the artist was commissioned $75,000. Hilton Hotel owner Arthur Robbins and his Hilton Hotel partners provided $50,000, and the
Lowell
Historic Preservation Commission provided the other $25,000. The City of
Lowell
appropriated $70,000 to develop the stone plaza around the
sculpture
