JOHN FROM GALWAY, IRELAND/R.I.P./A.O.H. signed
    Description: 
    An elaborately carved Celtic cross adorned on the front with the seal of the Ancient Order of Hibernians which consists of clasped hands, a harp, a rising sun, ivy, and shamrocks. On the back of the cross is another seal of the Ancient Order of Hibernians which consists of clasped hands, a harp, ivy, and shamrocks.

    The cross was erected by the Ancient Order of Hibernians in honor of Irish emigrants who lost their lives in the wreck of the St. John off the coast of Cohasset on Oct. 7, 1849. IAS files contain a copy of the Massachusetts Historical Commission Form C - Monuments questionnaire.
