    Remarks:
The monument commemorates the Clinton volunteer militia of Company K, 9th Massachusetts Infantry and the local Sisters of Charity nurses who served in the Spanish American War in 1898. And, it honors local men and women in the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps who served in the Spanish American War, as well as the Philippine Insurrection that closely followed. The relief images on the base are taken from photographs that are printed in the Clinton Centennial Volume: 1850-1950, pg. 9, available at the Clinton Historical Society. Originally, the monument was installed at the entrance to Clinton's first Town Hall (built in 1871) on the southeast corner of Church and Walnut Streets (along with the Civil War Monument --IAS record MA000413). When fire destroyed Town Hall building in 1907, the monument was moved to its current site about 350 feet away. IAS files contain a copy of the Massachusetts Historical Commission Form H - Parks and Landscapes questionnaire dated Dec. 1997.
