    A standing portrait of Josiah Bartlett holding a quill pen in his proper right hand and the Declaration of Independence scroll up in his proper left hand. The sculpture rests on a tall square base at the far end of the square.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture was modeled from portrait by painted by John Trumbull. In 1967 the sculpture was turned so that it faces the East rather than the South. IAS files contain a copy of the Massachusetts Historical Commission Form C - Object questionnaire dated June 1989.
    The Daily Evening Transcript (Boston), Dec. 9, 1887, 6:4 indicates that a contract for the casting was awarded to Ames.
